The number of couples seeking separation advice peaked in the month of May 2020, 42% of Australians that were surveyed said that they had experiencing negative changes to their relationship during isolation.
Relationships Australia is a national mediation service in Australia that assist in mediating disputes between separating couples. A survey conducted in May said that the numbers of people thinking about separating were up more than 300 per cent.
Sydney based family lawyer, Hayder Shkara, said separation inquiries had increased in the past month. “Our website has had an increase of 21% traffic compared to May 2019. There has been a lot of interest as to how to separate and live under the same roof, which makes sense given that people were not able to leave their property and they didn’t know how long this would last.”
People were also confused as to how the restrictions of movement and interstate travel would effect their parenting arrangements and parenting orders. As a result, the Family Court of Australia introduced a new COVID-19 List that would handle urgent applications that came about as a result of the lockdown.
“There are also a number of enquiries from people that have wanted to process their divorce for a while but have never got around to it. The time off appears to have assisted people to do the things that they never had time to do.”
It is important to note that the survey showed that although people’s relationships with their partners appear to have struggled, the survey noted that over 90 per cent of people reported no change, or positive changes in their relationships with their parents, children, friends, extended family, neighbours and colleagues.
